Transportation Construction Inspector (Full-time)

Hunt Valley, MD, Dover, DE, or Wilmington, DE

Rossi Group has an immediate opening for a Transportation Construction Inspector with basic engineering skills and experience in construction inspection, monitoring and documentation, and materials testing. The ideal candidate has 3-5 years of experience inspecting heavy construction and maintenance projects, conducting roadway and bridge inspections, maintenance operations, soil and material testing, engineering computations and documentation. Computer skills including Unifier, MS Office experience is a plus. Knowledge of basic engineering principles, practices and methods, design criteria, construction standards, inspection methods and techniques, basic mathematics used in engineering design, drawing and drafting, Temporary Traffic Control Standards, and Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, AASHTO and ASTM test specifications is sought. Skill in operating electronic and mechanical equipment used for performing technical inspection/engineering support tasks is required.

Education/Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Valid Maryland or Delaware Driver’s License

  • The candidate must have at least 3 years of related experience

  • OSHA 10-Hour Training

  • OSHA Silica Safety Training

  • National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) certification, in-house certifications or state-sponsored, material-testing certification may be required for some positions

  • Employees in this classification may be required to possess an American Society for Non-Destructive Testing Level I Certification

  • Employees in this classification may be required to achieve certification in field testing procedures in concrete, soil aggregate, and Hot Mix Asphalt within a given time period

  • Ability to learn new computer skills and data processing procedures

  • Ability to interpret and analyze contract documents; plans and specifications

  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations used in engineering and may require drawing and drafting

  • Ability to maintain records and adapt record systems for computerization

  • Ability to provide own transportation

  • Available for nighttime, evening/weekend hours as needed

Position Responsibilities:

  • Transportation Engineering inspection, design, materials testing, data collection, and administrative duties

  • Basic Computer skills: Microsoft Office

  • Writing Skills and communication with Contractors and State Employees

  • Document Control and understanding payment procedures is a plus

Preference May Be Given For:

  • Transportation or heavy construction-related experience

  • Experience working with Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT)

  • Experience working with Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT)

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

  • Employees are required to work in the field during survey and inspection assignments, with exposure to varying weather conditions and rough terrain, and the requirements for walking, standing, bending, and lifting loads weighing up to 80 pounds. 

  • Work requires close proximity to traffic on Delaware and Maryland highways. 

  • Required hand-eye coordination for the efficient operation of computers and other office machines, survey equipment, and field equipment.

Anticipated Wage and Benefits:

This is a Non-Exempt; full-time; 40 hours per week; (Monday through Friday) position. Overtime and nighttime work are anticipated. Rossi provides full benefits including matching 401k and profit sharing.

This position offers an anticipated salary range of $25/hr to $28/hr depending on experience, certifications and abilities. Nighttime differential is paid and all overtime is paid at 1.5 times pay rate. Mileage reimbursement for on-site work is paid. Fringe benefits including bonuses and commuter mileage are negotiable.
